Ask Me Anything: Holiday Travel Tips for Staying Comfortable

group of 4 seniors traveling during Christmas time, reviewing a map on where to go.

I recently got a great question from one of our customers in our Ask Me Anything segment that I thought so many of us could relate to. With holiday travel right around the corner, here’s what she wanted to know:

“I’m traveling over the holidays and want to make it as comfortable as possible, especially with my joint issues. Any tips?” - Maria P.

Holiday travel can be challenging enough—add in joint discomfort, and it’s a whole new game. Luckily, I’ve had my fair share of traveling through busy airports, long car rides, and frosty winter weather. So, here are a few things I’ve learned along the way to make holiday travel a bit more bearable.

1. Stretch It Out 🙆

Sitting for long stretches is tough on the joints. I make it a habit to stand up and stretch whenever I can, even if it’s just walking around the plane aisle or taking a quick stop on a road trip.

Roll your shoulders, stretch your legs, and give yourself permission to move a bit—your joints will thank you!

⚡ Quick Tip: Try stretching your ankles and calves while seated. Rotate each ankle slowly in circles to keep circulation going and prevent stiffness.

2. Keep Warm (Pack Extra Layers!) 🧣

Cold weather can be especially tough on joints, so I always layer up to keep myself cozy. Even if it’s warm where you’re going, airplanes and trains can get chilly. Extra socks, scarves, or a cozy sweater make a world of difference.

⚡ Quick Tip: If you’re prone to cold feet, consider packing a small, foldable blanket. It’s lightweight and can double as extra cushioning for achy spots!

3. Don’t Forget Your Essentials 💼

I never go anywhere without a small “comfort kit”—a few essentials that make a huge difference in how I feel on the road. My kit includes a travel-size pain cream for any unexpected aches, my Uric Acid Support Capsules, my water bottle (hydration is key!), and a few go-to snacks.

I usually bring some low-sodium nuts, dried fruit, and maybe a piece of dark chocolate. Too much salt can cause bloating, so I steer clear of overly salty snacks!

⚡ Extra Tip: Packing a small, soft pillow can be a game changer. It’s great for lumbar support on flights or cushioning sore joints against hard armrests.

4. Consider Compression Socks 🧦

These are a lifesaver! Compression socks can help keep your blood flowing and reduce that stiff, swollen feeling after a few hours of sitting. They’ve honestly changed the game for me when it comes to long flights.

⚡ Quick Tip: Slip your compression socks on before boarding or right before a long drive. They work best when they’re snug from the start!

5. Plan for Extra Time 🕰️

I know it’s tempting to jam-pack the itinerary but giving yourself some extra breathing room can help keep stress (and joint pain) at bay. This way, you’ve got plenty of time to stretch, settle in, and move comfortably without feeling rushed.

⚡ Quick Tip: Schedule rest breaks or light activity into your trip so you don’t overdo it. A little extra time can make the whole journey more enjoyable.

Traveling with joint discomfort isn’t always easy, but with a few thoughtful tweaks, you can enjoy the journey and the destination. Here’s to a comfortable, memorable holiday season wherever your travels take you! 🎄✨
