A while back, Dorothy M. asked me how to handle stiff knees, and while I gave a quick answer, I wanted to dive a bit deeper.
With this scorching weather we’ve been having, I bet many of us are feeling the heat—literally and figuratively! So, let’s chat about why the heat might be cranking up your knee discomfort and how you can find some relief. ☀️
Here’s the lowdown on why heat can mess with your knees:
1. Keep Moving, But Keep It Gentle 🚶♂️
Gentle exercise is key. Activities like swimming and walking are great because they keep your knees moving without too much strain. Swimming is especially good since the water supports you and takes some pressure off your knees.
2. Use Heat Therapy 🔥
Even in the summer, heat can be soothing. A warm bath or heating pad can help relax tight muscles and ease stiffness. On really hot days, you might find a warm towel or cozy bath is just what you need.
3. Watch What You Eat 🥦
Your diet can also impact how your knees feel. Try to avoid foods high in purines like red meat and certain seafood, as they can aggravate joint issues. Focus on anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, berries, and nuts instead.
4. Stay Hydrated 💧
Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated helps keep your joints lubricated and can help reduce discomfort.
5. Stretch It Out 🧘♂️
Gentle stretching can help maintain flexibility and reduce stiffness. Just remember to go slow and listen to your body—no need to push it too hard.
6. Compression Can Help 🦵
Compression sleeves or knee braces can offer extra support and help with swelling. They might be worth trying if you’re looking for some added relief.
7. Stay Cool and Beat the Heat 🏡
When it’s blazing outside, try to stay indoors as much as possible. Use fans or air conditioning to keep your space cool. If you need to go outside, try to do it early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. Wearing lightweight, breathable clothing can also help you stay comfortable.
I hope these tips make things a bit easier for you and your knees. Remember, you’re not alone, and I’m here to help however I can. Feel free to drop me a line if you have more questions!
Take care and stay cool,
