Tips on How to Increase Your Energy for Older Adults

Feeling tired throughout the day is a problem that many people struggle with. It can be because of nutrient deficiencies, lack of exercise, poor sleep, or even from an overload of responsibilities.

It’s important that, for the first step, you identify the underlying cause of your exhaustion. If you have found yourself missing opportunities and falling behind on your health, use some of these tips to help!


Minimize Caffeine

Drinking caffeine can definitely give you an energy boost, but as soon as it wears off, you can feel even more tired than you did before. Constantly consuming caffeine throughout the day can lead to increased stress levels, headaches, high blood pressure, and difficulty falling asleep.

It's important to try to minimize your caffeine intake throughout the day.

Drink Water

    Fatigue is one of the first signs of dehydration. To stay hydrated, try carrying around a water bottle with you wherever you go. If you can't, just be sure to drink water as often as you can. It's important to replace the fluids you lose throughout the day to keep your energy levels high.

    Eat Breakfast

      Eating breakfast gives you the fuel you need to start your day. Protein-rich foods, such as oatmeal, eggs, or yogurt, can help give you that boost of energy you need and, unlike caffeine, can provide you with long-lasting energy throughout your day.

      Decrease Stress

        Look into the areas of your life that tend to cause you the most stress so you can work on managing them. If you can minimize your work and life stressors, your energy levels could increase.

        Find moments in the day to take some time for yourself to relax. It's not uncommon for people to feel stressed or overwhelmed, so don’t let it fluster you if it takes some trial and error to find ways to relax and manage your stress.


          When you get out and spend time in the sun, you’re boosting your mood and getting a healthy dose of Vitamin D.

          Start the morning off right and go for a walk or simply open up the blinds. Natural light is the strongest factor that controls our circadian rhythms, so letting in the light can help give your body an energetic boost.


          Exercising can actually increase your energy levels. Wake up and go for a short walk or practice yoga.

          Exercising as soon as you get up may not be something you necessarily want to do, but it's a great way to wake up and recharge your body. Exercising outside can give you the added benefits of getting some fresh air and sunshine.
