Winter is approaching! We all know what happens when the weather gets colder.... The dreaded winter cold. Here are a few tips to boost your immune system, keep you strong and healthy, and decrease the chance of you coming down with that common cold this winter.
1. Exercise
Exercising promotes good circulation in the body. Circulation allows the cells and substances in the immune system to move through the body and better fight infection. Immune cells are responsible for increasing blood flow, strengthening antibodies, and reducing inflammation in the body.
When you are allowing your cells to circulate your body, you are building protection throughout. So, make sure you are getting your exercise this winter. Walking, bike riding, or swimming...just do something to get your body moving, and get your blood circulating. Aim for about 30 minutes of activity at least three days a week!
2. Go Outside
Vitamin D is an essential vitamin for boosting and strengthening the immune system. Spending time outside in the sun allows your body to naturally convert the Vitamin D from sun exposure, which helps to fight against infection. So, don't forget to get outside!
3. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep and immunity go hand and hand. Getting enough sleep may strengthen your immune system. This is why, when you are sick doctors recommend plenty of rest to allow your immune system to better fight illness. It is recommended for adults to aim for around 7 hours of sleep each night!
4. Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is important as it is, but it is even more important when trying to fight off sickness. Water is essential to carry oxygen to the cells in your body. The immune system depends on nutrients found in the blood stream, and the blood stream is made mostly of water.
If there isn't enough water in your body, it makes it harder for nutrients to get to each organ. Drinking water also prevents toxins from building up in the body. Itis recommended to drink about 15.5 cups a day for men, and about 11.5 cups for women, don't forget to drink up!
5. Take Vitamins
Sometimes your immune system needs a little extra help with vitamins! Vitamin C is great for fighting colds. It ramps up the antioxidant activity and absorbs other nutrients. Vitamin A is also great, and critical for T and B cell lymphocytes. These cells act as a response to an antigen in the body.
Vitamin B supports a strong immune function, and is great for boosting the immune system. There are many other vitamins out there that can help. Be sure to talk to your doctor to see which vitamin is right for you!
These are just a few tips to try and prevent that winter cold. There are many ways to stay healthy, and keep your immune system strong. We hope you stay healthy and safe this holiday season!
