Hey there!
Now that the air is getting crisp and the days are cooling off, drinking water might be the last thing on your mind. I totally get it—when it’s chilly outside, reaching for a glass of cold water isn’t exactly tempting!
But, staying hydrated is just as important in fall and winter as it is during those sweaty summer months, especially for us folks dealing with joint pain or trying to keep our uric acid levels in check.
Let me share why I’m making an effort to stay hydrated in cooler weather and how it’s helping me feel a little better.
It’s Cooler, So We Forget to Drink Water ❄️
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t feel as thirsty when it’s cold outside. It’s not like summer when you’re gulping down water just to stay cool. But even when you don’t feel thirsty, your body still needs that hydration.
When I forget to drink enough, I can feel my joints stiffening up. It’s like they’re crying out for a little extra lubrication, and water is what they need to stay flexible.
Uric Acid Levels? Keep 'Em in Check with Water ✅
If you’re like me and deal with high uric acid levels, you know how important it is to keep that under control. When we’re hydrated, our bodies can flush out extra uric acid more easily, which means less discomfort down the road.
But if I’m not paying attention, I’ll go hours without sipping water, and that can cause things to flare up. It’s so easy to get dehydrated without realizing it when the weather’s cooler—especially when we’re busy wrapping up in layers and rushing through the day.
Even though we're not sweating buckets like in the summer, cooler weather can actually dehydrate you faster in some ways, and here’s why:
Here’s what I’m doing to make sure I stay hydrated (and trust me, it’s made a difference for my joints!):
Keep That Water Bottle Handy 💧
This is an easy one, but if I don’t have my water bottle within reach, I tend to forget to drink. So now, it’s next to me at all times—on my desk, in the car, and even when I’m just lounging around at home. Sometimes, just seeing it reminds me to take a sip!
Warm It Up ☕
When cold water isn’t cutting it, I turn to warm drinks. A cup of herbal tea or warm lemon water is my go-to. Not only does it feel cozy, but it also helps me get those fluids in without feeling like I’m forcing it down.
Load Up on Water-Rich Foods 🥒
If you’re like me, eating can be more enjoyable than drinking water. I’ve started adding more hydrating foods to my meals, like cucumbers, oranges, and apples. It’s an easy way to sneak in more hydration without having to think about it too much.
Set Some Reminders ⏰
With everything going on, I sometimes just forget to drink water! So I’ve set a few reminders on my phone to take a sip every hour or so. It might seem silly, but it really helps, especially in the colder months when hydration isn’t top of mind.
The biggest thing I’ve noticed? Staying hydrated really helps my joints feel better. When I’m drinking enough water, my joints don’t feel as stiff, especially in the morning. Water helps keep the cartilage around them soft and cushioned, which means less friction and less discomfort when I move around.
For those of us managing gout or arthritis, staying on top of hydration can really help keep inflammation at bay. Trust me, I feel the difference when I’ve been consistent with my water intake!
So, as the weather cools down, don’t let hydration slip off your radar. Keeping your water intake up is one of the easiest ways to keep those joints moving smoothly and feel your best during the cooler months. So grab your favorite water bottle, cozy up with some tea, and make hydration part of your daily routine this fall.
Here’s to staying hydrated and feeling great all season long,
Brandon
